Why “We’ve Always Done It This Way” Is a Compliance Risk

  • 2 min read

In most labs, routines exist for a reason.

They’ve been built over time.
They’ve supported daily operations.
They’ve helped teams stay organized and efficient.

And because they’ve worked, they’re trusted.

That trust is what makes them hard to question.

Routine Creates Stability — and Blind Spots

Established processes bring consistency.

People know what to do.
Workflows move efficiently.
Tasks get completed without hesitation.

But over time, routine can shift from being helpful to being automatic.

Steps are followed without being reviewed.
Processes continue without being questioned.

And that’s where blind spots start to form.

Not because something is wrong — but because no one is looking closely anymore.

What Worked Before Doesn’t Always Hold Up

Lab environments don’t stay static.

Regulations evolve.
Testing complexity increases.
Staffing changes.
Volume grows.

But routines often stay the same.

A process that made sense on a smaller scale may not hold up under higher demand.
A procedure that met requirements before may no longer align with current expectations.

The gap isn’t always obvious.

But it’s there.

Familiarity Can Hide Inconsistency

When a process is repeated often enough, it feels correct.

Even when it isn’t fully aligned.

Documentation may reflect an older version of a procedure.
Training may vary slightly between team members.
Steps may be skipped or adjusted to save time.

On their own, none of it raises concern.

But over time, those variations create inconsistency.

And inconsistency is what inspectors notice.

The Risk Isn’t Resistance — It’s Assumption

Most labs aren’t resistant to change.

They’re operating under the assumption that their current approach is still working.

And without a clear system to validate that assumption, it’s difficult to see where things may have drifted.

So, processes continue as they always have — until something forces a closer look.

Reevaluation Needs to Be Built In

Strong compliance systems don’t rely on periodic review alone.

They build reevaluation into the process:
• Documentation is kept current and consistent
• Procedures are aligned with current practice
• Changes are reflected consistently across the system

That creates a natural checkpoint — so routines stay current, not just familiar.

Consistency Should Be Intentional

There’s value in experience. There’s value in routine.

But only when they’re supported by a system that keeps them aligned with what’s required today.

MyInspection® helps labs move beyond “the way it’s always been done” by providing structure, visibility, and control — so processes stay consistent, current, and compliant over time.

Because in compliance, familiarity isn’t the goal.

Accuracy is.

How MyInspection® Fits Your Lab

MyInspection® gives your lab a more structured way to manage CLIA compliance—bringing documentation, processes, and oversight into one clear, centralized system.

Designed with real-world lab experience behind it, it reflects how compliance is actually managed day to day. The result is greater visibility, stronger consistency, and a more confident approach to compliance — every day, not just at inspection time.
